LOL, {{{kpf, er, Eleanor}}}... and, Happy Fourth! we're thinking about you on land.... too tssst hot to do much outside- 'cept swimming; only after you lather up the kids and yourself with sunscreen...I feel sorry for the meat-cooker, the griller....Here I am at my PC with my AC on full-blast, checking out movie-listings...<g>...someplace far from the Essence Fest crowds downtown.

Eleanor was a reference to Mrs. FDR's quote "Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people." I truly do not understand people's facination with the travails of the famous, we all suffer heartbreak, troubles, disease, we all put our foot in our mouth, etc. I do hate to see issues put on the back burner due to silly people doing silly things, but "que sera sera." It's just another day offshore, the Fourth, Christmas - they're all the same. I will have fun once I'm back in, count on that. Enjoy the holiday KL.

"The fact that personalities - not issues - is what populates the front page, says a great deal about modern 'thinking' - or the lack thereof" Lord, if the world and all it's publications were only about "issues"-- what a boring place this would be. Eleanor, read "Scientific American".... Issues never go away... We need a little "human interest" in our news. Hey- it's the 4th of July, Eleanor.... loosen up a bit and celebrate, or just relax. The "A-team" is on vacation everywhere; no commentators on Cable, re-runs on networks...(no new BayouBuzz entries either)....but, Sarah Palin's news (however daunting it may be to you Rethugs) "is" front page material, but <sigh> MJ just won't go away.

I read recently that in the US we pay about $6000 per person for healthcare - which compares to 3000 (or so) in Canada and the UK. Why do we need MORE taxes to cover everybody as does Canada & the UK when we are already paying twice what they do per person?

Kajungal I do not have a problem funding healthcare or education, or anything that is essential. I would not dispute that these are essential. If we cut the non-essential stuff,we can have healthcare, etc. The problem as I see it is not that "greedy" taxpayers who would like to hold on to 50 or 60 % of their earnings are preventing healthcare from happening but rather all the vote buying and poitical payback that so very much of the budget is spent on. Not to harp on it endlessly, but the Democrats proposal for exempting union workers from paying for company paid healthcare (say a guy at a refinery pulling down $100 K per year) but not a non-union worker making much less having this benefit taxed is an indication - along with protecting another Democratic constituiency - the trail lawyers from tort reform - that the Democratic Party is NOT serious about healthcare reform and prefers to pander to their constituency instead of reforming healthcare for all, with the costs shared by all. This isn't the way to reach accord rather it is sowing the seeds of dissent. There are other "details" that matter with this. Without getting the details right, I hope it fails.

But back to healthy care………… That is something that must be dissected, and evaluated at and for its root value…. Again, ‘God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy’......... The answers are so obvious.

"Why does she have to give up her home and move to a retirement room?".... WB, first off, I knew you were an old softy deep-down, and thank God YOU were there for Gwen...Now, for the true reality:::: Lucky and fortunate are those who retire into old age with the assistance of their CHILDREN ... Otherwise, it can be a very lonely journey...Insurance Companies (the way they stand now) would "rather" pay home healthcare workers for Ms.Gwen, (but, you can't trust strangers working in your home). It's more cost-effective than footing the bill in a Nursing Home... Most elderly folks are on multiple medications too.... Do you have any idea what they PAY for these prescriptions?...($600 to $700 a month- cash off top, is average [you can look up stats-- probably HIGHER])... and that's WITH INSURANCE-- best plans money can buy....... WE ARE PAYING through the nose--- (and, get ready, KP, your generation is next.., that's just pills-- you know? for arthritis, heart problems, etc...).. And- if you cannot afford it, uh, like all the UN-INSURED, - you do without. Such an elitist system that is milking all of us dry... GOTTA get the cost of healthcare down... (Oh- and, WB- about the Corvette?-- short guys' phallic symbol).... We all deserve healthcare-- that's a basic human right... not just for those who can afford outrageous medical rates. (gettin old's a bi-otch)

But back to you Gab when you ask; “”Why is it that folks do not see fit to complain about having "universal" police and fire protection, yet whine about providing universal health protection? ”” I think you are living in a bubble….. Folks are complaining about “universal” police protection, and yes fire protection as well although I am not sure what issues are those you want to complain about within those two subject criterias…. Not going to get into them… I was cruising back to south Louisiana from up in Caldwell Parish last night and a country song came on……. The singer sang; “God is great….. Beer is good…. And people are crazy,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,” Values……. Interesting…….. I suppose it is up to each individual to consider what its value system is based upon………. I helped move a few things for a friend of mine to a nursing home while I was up there. She is 82, and hates to leave her home… But, she found herself short of funds but she has to move because she can’t afford a health care nurse to come to her house each day….. Not going to get into that tangent either because I myself couldn’t see the value in comparison to the cost involved with what she was utilizing, because basically the ‘door to door’ health care worker she had coming around was milking the clock and not performance based where the paycheck is concerned in my estimation… And I do not know exactly where that nurses paycheck comes from that is someone else’s problem…. All I know is my friend couldn't cover the cost, or the co-pay, or wutever, and I wasn't going to try to split hairs and simply accepted the reality for what it is..... The thing that saddened me most was watching Gwen’s eyes as she gazed out the sliding glass doors looking at her back yard….. I put some bird seed out for her, and some other goodies for her squirrel buddies…. She worried how they were going to get along once she moved… She worried about the figs going bad on her fig tree and her friends and neighbors not going to get a chance to can them……. Why does she have to give up her home and move to a retirement room? Her stocks and and dividends were eroded in this latest economic vodooo session that the tax payer got stuck with…… That was among several of the reasons, and she simply couldn’t afford to stay in her home anymore…. Yeah, there are lots of things that are wrong out there Gab, and you know something, it does no good to point them out and show how to fix things because no one is going to do a thing to fix it or them anyways… Folks seem to want to sit around and expect everyone else to fix it for them…… And then when someone can fix it, it is not good enough, they decide they want ‘star appeal’ instead….. Yeah Gab, enjoy the new reality, it is only a few months away and it is going to be stark…………………

Yeah but now for the double edge of the sword there Kp, for the most part, in the health care professionl, speaking of nursing, THEY ARE GENERALLY 'UNION' LABOR.... of sorts....... So here it is, """Union workers being having their company paid healtcare benefits exempt from being taxed """ + Union barganing mandating what their associated portion of the health care cost ticket is going to be in as far as wages and benefits are concerned, then striking whenever their nose gets bent out of shape and the snowball effects just keep on going on and on and on and on.......... In other words, in their percentile bracket of effect the Unions want to have their cake and eat it too at the expense of common folks.... I am not saying I believe unions are bad, but I do believe I am saying unions are not as goody - good - good as many of their members try to make theirselves out to be... And unions are perhaps one of the crippling reasons for the demise of the U.S. Auto industry.... I know they sure as hell were right up there in the responsiblilty ticket for the reason a corvette went up from back in the days for a 1967 Base Corvette Convertible cost $4,240 and the coupe variant was around $4,388.00 to today's cost for the 2009 Corvette Sting Ray which is expected to land around $100,000. This is of course is more expensive compared to the base 2009 Corvette Z06 which will cost around $70,000, but still.... Yeah, I know, there are extenuating circumstances we are talking here, but the fact of the matter is, within their individual percentile rates a lot of different factions have affected the price and cost of achieving the AMERICAN DREAM......

We all for it - but the Devil is in the details. Union workers being having their company paid healtcare benefits exempt from being taxed - which means workers who are not in a union - who typically have less pay and benefits - being taxed more to make up the difference as but one example. Why don't we ALL share the cost of this - why should a favored few be exempt from sharing the cost? I don't know the answer to that, we'll need to ask the Democrats in congress who are proposing this union exemption to get that answer.

Why is it, WB, that folks do not see fit to complain about having "universal" police and fire protection, yet whine about providing universal health protection? Why is it that we, as a society, see the worth in universal protection of property, but do not see the value in universal protection of our health and well-being?

Seriously folks - if you knock your noggin - or a loved one takes a hard knock on the head - either ake them to the hospital or keep them from sleeping for 10/12 hours. If they start to complain about feeling bad, or exibit any unwarrented nervousness, agitation or odd behavior (difficult to descern in some folks) then take them to the hospital. Too many take a blow on the head, go to sleep then no one realizes they have suffered an injury that without medical care will cause death.

Hi! Billy Mays here for universal bad 'health care'..... Ever been stuck in a hospital waiting for a hip surgery the next day and suddenly keeled over dead? Well not no more, now you can stay at the Universal Inn the day before surgery and bypass that nasty dying in a room 2 floors above the Emergency Room..... It's really simple, and there is no flying around and without those pesky little tube socks and gym bags falling on your head from an overhead luggage compartment when the cheap foreign made tires blow out on your airplane when you land.... So take it from me, Billy Mays, the Universal Inn is the place to stay... Only 9.95 a night........

Gabriella's point about "sensationalism over substance" is valid. What passes for "news" often times more resembles the front page of the National Enquirer than thoughtful commentary about the important issues of the day. I wonder what politicians may have been cheating on their wives while allowing Hitler to assume power in Germany in the thirties? Is that really important?

Our media, KjunLady, will seek the path of least resistance, manufacturing a mountain from a mole hill; it will seek sensationalism over substance. Sad to say there will be more effort invested in learning the "real" cause of Jackson's death than following the real uprising in Iran. Truly, how "short are our memories?" Though Iranians have been shot, beaten and arrested the protests continue. And our news remains fixated on Jackson. The green uprising has hacked into and brought down government computers, protesters have chased police down the street and the media is focused on Jackson's many surgeries. Michael Jackson is dead, that is the end of his story; the uprising in Iran still has a thriving heartbeat, should that matter?

Hey, Kl, being as you want to stir the melting pot - - - JENA 6 CASE WRAPPED UP WITH PLEA BARGAIN - - - - AP – FILE - This Oct. 2, 2007 file photo shows protesters outside the U.S. Justice Department in Washington … 43 mins ago JENA, La. – Five members of the Jena Six have pleaded no contest to misdemeanor simple battery and were sentenced to seven days probation and fined $500 plus court costs........ It was a far less severe end to their cases than seemed possible when the six students were initially charged with attempted murder in a 2006 attack on Justin Barker. They became known as the "Jena Six," after the central Louisiana town where the beating happened......... Later, charges against Carwin Jones, Jesse Ray Beard, Robert Bailey Jr., Bryant Purvis and Theo Shaw were reduced to aggravated second-degree battery. The only member of the group to serve jail time was Mychal Bell, who pleaded guilty to second-degree battery and was sentenced to 18 months......... A civil hearing is also scheduled today to settle Barker's lawsuit against the group.

Well folksies, I suppose a lot could be said about 'Universal Health Care'.... Here we have examples of two celebrity people, (not including Ed McMahon who lived to be a ripe old age) that died fairly young in the past week or so... I am sure they had the best doctors money could buy... And it just goes to show that there is not a doctor one walking this earth that can really save a life.... Kind of makes me wonder what makes them think they can try to trick a person into working and slaving their live away just so they can give their life savings to them when they reach 50 or 60 in the hopes of squeezing a few more months of bedridden life out of the deal? So I suppose the moral of the story could be; 'Lot's of people have tried to live forever, and every single one of them died trying'.
