Since the beginning of the Ringside Politics TV and radio shows, we have enjoyed an annual Thanksgiving tradition of awarding our “Turkey of the Year” to recognize individuals who distinguished themselves in a particularly foolish way. It seems appropriate since turkeys are commonly regarded as one of the most dim-witted animals on the planet.
Over the 20 years of the Ringside Politics shows, we have established an annual contest of awarding our “Turkey of the Year.” This Thanksgiving tradition was started to recognize those individuals who distinguished themselves in a particularly idiotic way. It seems appropriate since turkeys are commonly regarded as one of the dumbest animals on the planet.
It is already difficult enough for Republicans to win elections today. They face an onslaught of unfair media coverage and an array of special interests working on behalf of the Democrats. It is even more difficult when the top party leader, House Speaker Paul Ryan, is regularly critical of President Trump. The latest controversy involves the question of birthright citizenship. Currently, American citizenship is granted to children of illegal aliens who are born in this country. In an interview this week, the President vowed to end the practice through executive order.
For years the Republican Party has been promising to enact tough border security measures that would stop the flow of illegal immigrants into this country. They have campaigned on funding a border wall, ending “catch and release” policies, putting a halt to chain migration and finally starting to crack down on companies that employ illegal aliens.
The latest polls show the potential for a “blue wave” of Democratic Party victories this fall. Conventional wisdom holds that the Democrats will win back control of the U.S. House and possibly the U.S. Senate, even though they have to defend 25 seats compared to only eight for the Republicans.
Louisiana Congressman, Steve Scalisse for US Congress's Speaker of the House of Representatives? Is that a possibility? As of this morning, what was once a rumor is now a serious discusson since current speaker Paul Ryan has decided not to run for re-election this fall, leaving a leadership vacuum.
So, as Jim Brown and Christopher Tidmore and I were readying to discuss the Louisiana legislative session via Bayoubuzz’s Facebook, Twitter, Youtube LIVE, this morning, opportunity suddenly arose to shift gears and focus upon the “hot” and significant national news that could have a huge local impact.
It’s been a bad last few weeks for the nation’s top law enforcement agency. First, an innocent hostage was shot and killed in a botched raid in Houston by an FBI shooter. Then the television movie series “Waco,” debuted and revisited the FBI killings of innocent victims in both Ruby Ridge and Waco. And currently, the Bureau faces charges by members of congress of malfeasance and even interfering in the most recent president election.
Yabba, dabba do! It’s back to James Comey is a liar according to Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House Press Secretary. “He lied,” she averred Monday, and claimed there’s new information that supports Comey’s firing as FBI Director. Brand new stuff! Can’t wait! Comey’s alleged dishonesty when he famously appeared before Congress to discuss his firing, Sanders said, was a matter for DOJ to investigate. She’s just a tad late and a dollar short.
