The primary date for the statewide race is October 14. It appears that a runoff is likely, which will be held on November 18.
There are three major candidates among the seven that are seeking the post – Riser, former state Rep. John Schroder, and Angele Davis. All three are Republicans.
There is a Democrat in the race – Derrick Edwards of New Orleans. He is receiving little help from the Louisiana Democratic Party and he has raised less than $10,000. Edwards is paralyzed from a 1989 football injury and is in a wheelchair, but went on to become an attorney.

Nevertheless, Edwards is running ahead of the pack in a poll conducted by JMC Analytics in late August. The results of that poll was Edwards 25%, Davis 14%, Riser 6%, and Schroder 5%.
The poll indicates a lack of statewide interest in the Treasurer’s race. It is not an exciting position, but it is an important one because it is a guardian of the state’s money. Voter turnout is expected to be low because there are few local elections on the ballot on October 14 to encourage voters to go to the polls.
