Trump in Louisiana Governor's race rescue for Rispone or Abraham vs. Edwards Featured

After the start of early voting and days before Election Day, President Donald Trump decided to intervene in the Louisiana Governor’s race. The intent of his Tuesday morning tweet was unmistakable. He wants to help both Republican candidates, businessman Eddie Rispone and U.S. Congressman Ralph Abraham, and force incumbent Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards into a “runoff.” The President urged Republicans to vote for “either” of the candidates, referring to them as “both Great.”

In the tweet, the President labeled Edwards as a “Nancy Pelosi/Chuck Schumer Democrat” who will “NEVER be for us.” He is certainly right for Edwards is not a “centrist” or a “conservative Democrat” at all. He has massively grown the state budget, radically expanded Medicaid and a host of taxes and supported Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential race.

In 2018, Edwards also donated $5,000 to the campaign of far-left Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who returned the favor by campaigning in Louisiana for the Governor. No true moderate would support Stacey Abrams, who has denounced free markets and advocates an influx of illegal aliens as part of the “blue wave” that will give Democrats complete political control over the nation.

Edwards has been hesitant to condemn President Trump, who received 58% of the Louisiana vote in the 2016 presidential race. After the President’s endorsement, the Edwards campaign released the following statement, “He’s worked well with presidents of both parties, including President Trump. He’s visited nine times with President Trump, working with him on criminal justice reform, infrastructure and the opioid epidemic. Governor Edwards looks forward to continuing his good working relationship with President Trump in the governor’s second term.”

Governor Edwards is walking a political tightrope, expressing a spirit of cooperation toward President Trump, while supporting leftist Democrats on the national stage.  He knows he needs to keep the Democratic Party united and try to siphon some moderate Republican voters from his GOP challengers.

Facing a real threat of Edwards winning the election on October 12, it is time for an emergency intervention by President Trump. He needs to schedule a last-minute series of rallies across the state, campaigning for both Rispone and Abraham.

This will focus statewide Republicans on the urgent necessity of defeating John Bel Edwards in the upcoming election. Currently, too many Republicans are either undecided or supporting Edwards for re-election.

If Edwards wins another four-year term, he will be unleashed and pursue a more liberal agenda because he will be term limited and will not need to worry about re-election. It will be a real lost opportunity for the state because the state legislature will have an even larger number of Republicans in the next term. With Edwards as Governor, real reform will be stymied, but if a Republican Governor is elected, the state can truly move forward with a conservative agenda.

The stakes are high for a state that is losing population and has the worst economy in the nation. We cannot lose another four years, which is why President Trump needs to get more involved in these final days of the race.
