In an open letter to the Lt. Governor Dardenne, Egan said Dardenne's behavior is "akin to a jilted man firing indiscriminately at his ex-wife's car".
Egan urges that Dardennne reconsider or to formally espouse the Democratic Party.

According to the Chairman of the St. Tammany Republican Parish Executive Committee, Peter Egan, Republican Jay Dardenne's action of publicly supporting Democrat Jon Bel Edwards is a "vehement act of retribution".
