Captain Louie is the story of a young boy on Halloween night who escapes into his own imagination as a means of coping with the loneliness he feels when he moves to a new neighborhood. Of its initial production, The New York Times said Captain Louie captures "the sound and rhythm of music that runs through childhood fantasies with a book that conveys the communicative magic of the original story."
The story is full of tricks and treats, and the incomparable music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin). Most of all, Captain Louie is about friendship -- the ability to make new friends and the importance of old ones.

Tony O'Neill will read the most vile scenes from his 2010 novel, SICK
CITY- plus from a work-in-progess. He will be joined by eclectic New
Orleans performers - Ratty Scurvics, Ooops the Clown, Trixie Minx,
Bella Blue from Fleur de Tease and J.Lloyd Miller from The Bingo Show.
The night will be hosted by poety-slam MC, Nick Fox. Copies of Tony's
novels will be on sale from Lee Ware, in the guise of a cigarette girl
from 1940's clubs, holding a book ladened tray and asking "Sick City?
Down and Out? Sick City?"
There will be a $7.00 cover charge, 100% of which goes to the
performers (less Tony, who merely wishes to share the darker shades of
his muse). If that $7.00 is the make or break in attending the show, I
do know The Guy who handles The List (that being me) and can, if
necessary, get you on the comp list ... if you're comfortable taking
money from a poor clown.

The exhibition also includes correspondence, Playbills, and family photographs documenting Williams's talent for drawing from life to create some of the most compelling characters in American theater history.

FILMING NOTICE
Office of Cultural Economy issued a filming notice to city hall employees and the surrounding area.
Farraday Films, LLC, is preparing to film the motion picture "Contraband" between January 27, 2011 and February 2, 2011 on Poydras between Bolivar Street and South Prieur Street, north of I-10.
No parking will be permitted on these blocks between now and February 2, 2011. Additionally, no parking will be permitted under the I-10 overpass. "NO PARKING" signs will be posted in this area, and vehicles parked in these areas will be towed.
Citizens may hear simulated rapid gunfire and explosions during filming. Do not be alarmed, as this is part of the filming for "Contraband". The New Orleans Police Department will provide officers during filming days to oversee traffic control and monitor safety.

Fortheir recital on Sunday, January 30 at 6:00 pm, at St. Mary's Church,
1100 Chartres St., pianist Jean-Baptiste Monnot, Young Artist in Residence
at the St. Louis Cathedral, and violinist Joseph Meyer, Concert Master of
the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Jean-Marie Leclair's
Sonata in D major (Opus 9 no. 3), Olivier Messiaen's Thème et variations
(1932), Nathan Milstein's arrangement of Frederick Chopin nocturne c sharp
minor (opus posthumous), and Robert Schumann Sonata for Violin and Piano No.
2 in d minor (opus 121).
The concert will be free and open to the public.
Jean-Baptiste Monnot, Young Artist-in-Residence at the St. Louis Cathedral,
is a graduate with honors from both the Rouen and Paris Conservatories. A
student of Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard, additional studies have been
with Jean Guillou of Paris and
Bernard Haas of Stuttgart. He has played recitals through France, and
appeared in Australia, Austria, Belgium
Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan,
Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

NOBA is thrilled to reunite two remarkable creative forces, Trey McIntyre Project and Preservation Hall Jazz Band, in an extraordinary world premiere event. TMP is a prolific American force on the international dance scene. PHJB, currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary, is the legendary champion of New Orleans jazz. Together, and for one night only, ten phenomenal dancers will unite with seven illustrious musicians in a world premiere experience that will include an exclusive encore main stage presentation of Ma Maison.
Creative Collabortion
When Trey McIntyre launched his new company rooted in classical ballet and blasted onto the international dance scene in 2008, NOBA invited this trailblazing choreographer, known for his hip and contemporary dances, to create a new work set to New Orleans jazz music. The result was Ma Maison, the critically-acclaimed collaboration with PHJB that has toured the world to rave reviews, including a recent special appearance at the Hollywood Bowl that was hailed as "shockingly powerful" and "one of the most stunning performances all year" by The LAist.
Hotel Monteleone Hosts History Book Launch and Legacy Series Luncheon
First of Five Luncheons Focuses on Literary History
The Hotel Monteleone is hosting a book signing and champagne toast for its history book, Hotel Monteleone: More Than a Landmark, The Heart of New Orleans Since 1886.. The book's author, Jenny Adams, and designer, Phillip Collier Designs, will be available to sign purchased copies Immediately following the book launch is the first luncheon, "Hotel Monteleone: A Literary Landmark," in the Hotel's 5-part Legacy Series. Hosted by local media personality, Jeff Crouere, the panel discussion will present an introductory overview of the Hotel's literary history and Italian-American influence while showcasing the famous authors who helped it to earn the distinction of Literary Landmark. Panelists include Jan and Bob Carr, New Orleans broadcast icons; Mark Cave, curator for the Tennessee Williams holdings at The Historic New Orleans Collection; New Orleans authors Marda Burton and Jenny Adams; Nell Nolan, The Times Picayune social columnist; Susan Larson, local literary critic and WWNO radio host; and Dr. Kenneth Holditch, retired UNO professor, literary historian and guide for New Orleans Literary Tours (as of January 18, 2011).
Both the book signing and luncheon are open to the public.

History Book: As part of its 125th anniversary celebration, the Hotel Monteleone is releasing its very own book to capture all aspects of its rich history including the construction of the hotel throughout the years, various influencing factors such as fashion trends and cultural events, and stories from the people
who have shaped its history.
Legacy Series: Hosted by Jeff Crouere, the 5-part Legacy Series will feature bimonthly panels on the arts, politics and culture of New Orleans. In a luncheon setting, Jeff will guide panelists in a discussion that positions the Hotel Monteleone's history as an integral part of New Orleans' history.
The launch of the history book and the champagne toast are free and open to the public. Attendees can purchase a copy of the book for $45. Authors will be available to inscribe the purchased books.

WHY: On Thursday, February 10, The Historic New Orleans Collection and
the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will present "Identity, History,
Legacy: La Société Philharmonique," the fifth installment of "Musical
Louisiana: America's Cultural Heritage." The popular concert series and
educational program examines an aspect of the state's
contributions to classical music each year. This year's program is
presented in conjunction with The Collection's exhibition, In Search of
Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre-Civil War New Orleans, and the
16th annual Williams Research Center Symposium, "Identity, History,
Legacy: Free People of Color in Louisiana."
The 2011 concert will feature music that was performed by La Société
Philharmonique, a mid-19th century orchestra composed of free men of
color in New Orleans. Under the direction of conductor Thomas Wilkins,
musical highlights include Rossini's Overture to Semiramide, Alard's La
Traviata (Fantasy for Violin and Piano, op. 38), and Verdi's "Caro nome"
from Rigoletto. Following a typical program of this orchestra and its
contemporaries, a dramatic reading will also be presented-Victor Séjour's
"La Retour de Napoléon (The Return of Napoleon)."
Along with the exhibition, the symposium and concert will explore the impact of this important and long understudied population.
This project has been made possible by the National Endowment for the
Arts as part of American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius.
