The $30,000 first prize was awarded to the team of Cadence, Poulos Brown Civil Engineers and Studio Snyder. Their concept, “Vive l’Esplanade,” allows for programmed space for community events, a playground and several educational components including a bioswale that filters storm water runoff.
In addition to actual designs, the teams were also required to provide project estimates and identify potential funding sources to aid the parish in implementing designs.
Three cash awards of $5,000 each were also presented to the following applicants: a consortium of Brown + Danos Laddesign, The Metalsmith, and Duplantis Design Group; Reich Associates; and the team of Waggonner & Ball, Bosch Slabbers Landscape, and Nelson Engineers.
A total of seven teams were invited to participate in the competition. All designs are the property of EJBA. Any component of the submissions may be implemented in the final design.

Country Day and Madeleine Albright
Former U.S. Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, will participate in an on-stage conversation with Metairie Park Country Day School students on Tuesday, May 24, at 9:30 a.m., in the school’s Weinmann Auditorium.
Secretary Albright will visit New Orleans to launch her exhibit Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Secretary Albright will provide brief remarks and engage in an on-stage discussion and Q&A with Metairie Park Country Day School middle and upper school students.
Receivables Exchange
The Receivables Exchange, the real-time online marketplace for working capital, announced today that it has been selected as a finalist for the 2011 American Business Awards in two categories, with a double nomination in one category. The Exchange’s Commercial Receivables Paper (CRP) Market and Invoice Import System are both finalists for “New Product or Service of the Year,” and the company’s management team is a finalist for “Management Team of the Year.” The American Business Awards, also known as the Stevie® Awards, are a public recognition of the efforts, accomplishments, and positive contributions of companies and business people worldwide. This year’s Stevie Award winners will be announced during the annual gala on Monday, June 20 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Other finalists include American Express, Google, Intel and Amazon.com.
Hurricane Season Preparation
Jefferson Parish is holding a Hurricane Prep Rally 10am – 4pm, Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Lafreniere Park Pavilion in Metairie, Louisiana. Admission is free.
This year’s event will offer citizens of Jefferson Parish helpful information on how to prepare their homes and families for hurricane season, evacuation, and will allow them to learn how their parish is prepared to respond.
Participants include Jefferson Parish departments and agencies essential to the safety and protection of our citizens, their loved ones, and their homes in the event of a hurricane. Some of the departments and agencies involved include the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center Mobile Command Unit, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Parish Fire Departments, Louisiana State Police, HazMat Responders, Emergency Medical Services, City of Kenner Police and Fire Departments, Entergy, Jefferson Parish Drainage Department, Citizens Affairs and Elderly Services, Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, Environmental Affairs, East Jefferson Emergency Medical Services, West Jefferson Emergency Medical Services, and many more.
Live demonstrations will show the dangers of electrocution from downed power lines, the life-saving hands-on experience of how to escape a fire, an interactive scale-model of how our drainage system works and where all the water goes, and our first responders will display their impressive high-water and rescue vehicles.
Jefferson Parish personnel will offer citizens on-the-spot registration for the JPAlert Community Notification System and will assist business owners with the opportunity to pick-up their 2011 Re-Entry Placards essential for businesses returning to Jefferson Parish after evacuating. Emergency Management staff also will provide information on how businesses can register.
