ROSTER CHANGES: The Saints announced Satuday that they have waived/injured T Alex Barron, waived/vested veteran/left squad C Olin Kreutz and signed QB Sean Canfield. The announcements were made by Saints’ Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis.
Barron was signed by the Saints as a free agent on August 3, 2011. A former Rams first round pick in 2005, Barron started 74 games over 5 years in St. Louis. He was traded to Dallas last year, starting just one game before hitting the free agent market this offseason. Barron, 29, was active for 11 games last year. Barron suffered a knee injury early in training camp with the Saints and had been placed on injured reserve on August 18.
Kreutz had appeared in 195 career games with 187 starts in his 14-year NFL career. Originally a third round draft choice of the Chicago Bears in 1998, the former University of Washington standout had spent the first 13 seasons of his career in Chicago where he was a six-time Pro Bowl selection. He started all four games at center he appeared in for New Orleans in 2011 after signing with the club in training camp.
Canfield, 6-4, 223, has spent a significant part of the past two seasons on the Saints practice squad after being picked by the club in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL draft. The former Oregon State standout spent one game on the active roster in 2010, following a college career where he started 24 games for the Beavers and completed 522-of-861 (64.1%) passes for 5,970 yards, 38 touchdowns and 26 interceptions, while Canfield while was the quarterback.
