RIP Van Buren and New Orleans Saints, Houston Texans news

RIP: Steve Van Buren, the Hall of Fame RB who led the Eagles to NFL titles in 1948 and 1949, has died. He was 91. The former Warren Easton and LSU star led the NFL in rushing four times. He was born in Honduras. When his parents died when he was 10, he moved to New Orleans to live with his grandparents. He is survived by three daughters.



The Saints want RB Mark Ingram healthy for Week 1 so they have limited his practice time in the preseason. Ingram says he still does mental reps during practices. Ingram dealt with several injuries last season...The loser of the kicking battle between Garrett Hartley and John Kasay will end up kicking for another team this season...Tyrone Mathieu, the Honey Badger's adoptive father said, 'Tyrann is in the Houston rehab center working on discipline, maturity and character. He's making life adjustments."...

SOME hither, others yon: Texans inside LB Brian Cushing (ribs) and WR DeVier Posey (calf) didn't practice Thursday and might miss their game with the Saints on Saturday night. The Texans lost to the Saints 40-33 last preseasons in an embarrassing performance by their defense. This is the last chance for the coaches to watch their starters. Most will be spectators in the Saints final preseason game at Tennessee...

If you want an idea of who is favored to make the final cuts, check out the kicking game on Saturday night. The players that are starting on the four core special team units (kickoffs, kickoff returns, punts, punt returns) are in a position to stick with the opening-day roster...

New Orleans Hornets

Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers gathered in  New York to have their pictures taken in their new NBA jerseys. Between sessions, the players shot baskets with kids and did interviews. Davis was mobbed the entire time. But they had some fun, too.  A Skip Bayless (ESPN opinionated commentator) cardboard cutout was placed in front of one the baskets. Davis then launched into the air, dunked over cardboard Skip, and tried to kick the knocked-down Skip Bayless, because, Skip Bayless...
